Site back online - locate32
Some wacko kept posting some nasty messages on this site a while ago. I got fed up and shut down the site for quite some time. Let me revive the site and try to find some ways to get rid of him if the wacko comes back again.

If you are a linux user and also use Windows, you'd probaly miss the locate utility in linux. I recently came across the free utility program locate32 http://www.uku.fi/~jmhuttun/english/index.html. Locate32 helps you find files in your computer (including samba shares from Linux and network drives) with ease.

Verified anonymous proxies for Hong Kong net-surfers
I took some time to write a few PHP scripts for validating proxies from http://www.publicproxyserver.com and http://www.proxy4free.com. I use hk.yahoo.com to validate and test the response time of the proxies. The proxies listed are generated every 12 hours. Only proxies with total time smaller than 5 seconds (for downloading hk.yahoo.com's hompage) are listed. Note that the proxies are tested from Hong Kong.

The proxies are in
http://mzwang.eie.polyu.edu.hk/files/proxies4hk.txt

Check the anonymity of the proxies by using http://www.whatismyip.com or better yet http://proxyjudge.org.

If you use Firefox, you can install the Swicthproxy extension and configure Firefox to load the proxies automatically everyday.

TOR ranks number one in a list of Top 10 Windows Freeware tools for 2005
TOR, the proggy I mentioned in the previous post, ranks number one in SnakeOil Labs's Top 10 Windows Freeware tools for 2005.

http://www.snakeoillabs.com/2005/10/03/top-10-windows-freeware-tools-for-2005/

TOR also ranks 40 in PCworld.com's The 100 Best Products of 2005 (Firefox being number one).

p2p (emule) and tor (http://tor.eff.org/)
Recently, some P2P traffics are being tracked and times P2P users are being harassed. I am not saying dowloading illegal software and stuff is a good thing. But Emule can certainly be used to download other freeware and so.

The nasty messages can be avoided if you are willing to bear with a lower download rate. You can use Tor, the anonymous Internet communication system, at http://tor.eff.org/. To quote from the Tor site, "your traffic is safer when you use Tor, because communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers, called onion routers."

To install Tor is straight forward. To use Emul with Tor set proxy to socket4a and point to 127.0.0.1 at port 9050 (for default setup).

When you use Tor's socket4a directly, you'll get some warning about DNS leaking. You can ignore the warning messages. Emule does not work with privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org) chained with Tor in my testing. If you somehow manage to make it work, please let me know.

If you are willing to help out the Tor project a bit, you can run an onion router from you broadband connection. Currently, most onion routers are in U.S. Running an onion router is not too difficult, all you need to do is to edit the torrc file in %appdata%/tor a bit.
